The “Big 4” fashion weeks have now wrapped for the northern hemisphere Autumn/Winter 2014 season, and our ever-increasing slew of Australian designers showing overseas are returning home. As I enter the show room back here in humble Oz, I am completely enveloped by the holistic sense of style. Fresh off the plane from Paris sits Ellery’s International Autumn/Winter 2014 collection.

This is the second Ellery collection to show on the Paris Fashion Week schedule following her début Spring/Summer collection in October last year.

For those like me, who have been loyal devotees to the Ellery brand since its inception, you will notice a definite change in the brand’s last few collections. This is her most considered and developed collection to date. No doubt, a reflection of Kym’s development and growth as a designer and the brands extension to the international market.

The collection entitled Patienta Vincit Tandems, featured a well-executed use of layers and impeccably paired textures, delivering the thoughtfulness we expect from Ellery’s collections; while the signature bold use of volume fortified the punchy statement she undeniably came to make. Ellery delivered a mostly monochromatic palette for winter, which was punctuated by pale mint, French navy, forest green and a reworked interpretation of a paisley print.

Ellery’s instinct to go big and voluminous has always underpinned her design and this collection was no different. Featuring oversized bell sleeves, fluted hems and trumpet skirts; it was a reinterpretation of the exaggerated flare pants that have become the reigning Ellery silhouette.

The tailored elements of the collection sat nicely against the juxtaposition of the delicate sunray pleating, which made a début this season. In particular the structured winter white bodice with hand draped pleating and the ankle length V-neck dress with pleated front apron showed off a look of elegant strength.

Yet again Ellery wowed with her innovative selection and application of fabrics. Fused gauze linen, triple silk organza, stylish suiting and virgin wool with hand-sewn sequins all made for a sensational yet harmonious textural narrative.

It is clear that Ellery has an intuitive grasp of fuss free fashion. Despite the intricacies and bold statement silhouettes the collection remains effortlessly chic and deceptively easy to wear. Kym Ellery has succeeded in delivering an impeccably soigné look.  A look that Australian and international buyers are clambering for. The label recently landed prestigious Hong Kong department store Lane Crawford as a stockist, who will join the ever-growing list in Paris, New York, Los Angeles and Japan.

You can find Ellery’s latest collection in stores now.
