When fashion veteran Alice McCall unveiled her Resort 19 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFWA) this week, we saw the trademark Alice McCall feminine florals and lace in playsuits, twin-sets and mini dresses, with a modern, grown-up edge.

This season, if the MBFWA runway is anything to go by, the Alice McCall girl will be just as at home at an evening soiree as she is at the races. Think finely pleated tulles, vertical ruffles, floor-length strappy gowns and detailed sleeves.

The colour palette? It’s beyond pretty, with sweet pastels offset with turn-around-twice fuchsias and acidic apple greens. It’s the signature Alice McCall palette with a punchy, fresh twist.

The standout? An ankle-grazing gold pleated number that closed the show. And let’s not forget the pastel accessories. Models took to the runway in capped-toe pumps, hardware-adorned belts and cross-body bags to match. Already well-received by the style set at MBFWA, we’re sure we’ll see more from McCall in the accessories department.

“I design dresses for girls to have a great time in. To celebrate. To have fun. I find it really interesting to push boundaries…to create something that is pretty and adds a boldness,” McCall says.

Key takeaways from the runway

Pleats, please!
From the striking gold and fuchsia full-length gowns to the somewhat dramatic purple two-piece set, pleats reigned supreme on the Alice McCall runway.

Excess baggage
Any fashion girl knows the value of adding an on-trend bag to her look. This season, we saw an update on the already-popular bum bag, this time serving more as a belt, along with dome-shaped cross-body bags that work just as well carried by the handle.

Pop of colour
No stranger to a beautiful palette, this year Alice McCall delivered the addition of bold fuchsia, Kermit-green and almost-metallic violet. Whether in block colour dresses or floral-printed playsuits, we left the MBFWA show vowing to add more colour to our wardrobe.

We caught up with the designer backstage at MBFWA to discuss the inspiration behind the Resort 19 collection, get the lowdown on those shoes and find out her plans for the future.
