This summer, QAGOMA will play host to a career-spanning survey of work by leading contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama. Running from 4th November to 11th February 2018, the exhibit is an awe-inspiring display of the wild, wonderful and vibrantly beautiful work of Kusama.

Reviewing a career spanning over seven decades, the exhibit Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow, co-curated by QAGOMA and National Gallery Singapore, is an incredible testament to Kusama’s incredibly well regarded and beloved body of work. The exhibit will explore key motifs in Kusama’s work, such as her use of colour and patterns, and her unique conception of space. The entire exhibition includes over 70 pieces of work, including early painterly experiments, soft-sculpture and assemblage, performance documents, “infinity rooms”, and large-scale installations from the latter part of her career.

Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines said, “the exhibition culminates in an immersive presentation of Kusama’s most recent paintings from the visually arresting ‘My Eternal Soul’ series (2009 – ongoing),” and is potentially the most striking part of the entire experience. What initially began as a project comprising of 100 canvases, the riotously bright and bold series now includes more than 500 paintings, of which 24 of the newest will be showcased as part of the exhibition.

Mr Saines also commented on QAGOMA’s longstanding relationship with Yayoi Kusama and her Tokyo-based studio, stating “Our Gallery’s long-standing relationship with Yayoi Kusama and her Tokyo-based studio was established in 1989 when the artist participated in the exhibition ‘Japanese Ways, Western Means’ at QAG.”
