Word has it that the term ‘Christmas in July’ came from an 1892 French opera where a group of children would sing a Christmas song in July. There are even rumours that the term came from the aptly titled 1940 movie, ‘Christmas in July’. There was also an event in 1944 when the U.S postal service threw a Christmas lunch to promote an early Christmas mailing campaign for the soldiers fighting in World War II. But really, we reckon it’s as simple as us Aussies adopting the traditions of the Irish and English so we could experience a wintery Christmas with all the trimmings.
Whatever kick-started the trend, we’re here for it. As the Southern Hemisphere hits the peak of winter, we finally get to attempt to live out a scene from a dreamy Christmas movie with snow all around and mulled wine aplenty. Although our snow may not be metres thick, nor the spirit as merry, it’s a great excuse to get together, enjoy a roast meal and finally don an ugly Christmas sweater without sweating our butts off.
With that, you may as well go all out! Check out the below events and get the sleigh bells ringing.
D’Arcy Arms | Gold Coast
Step off the strip and into a true Irish pub at the D’Arcy Arms in Surfers Paradise. With all the charm and trimmings of a traditional English pub, you’ll be surrounded by Christmas spirit instantly. Don’t forget your dessert tidings! Finish off with a traditional pudding with Brandy anglaise and ice cream. If that doesn’t taste like Christmas, what does? Cosy up and leave the hassle behind!
