Want an Australian outback experience? Big Skies festival has got you covered.

Wanting to escape the city for the weekend? This is the event for you. Kicking off on Saturday, April 28 and running through until Sunday, May 6, the inaugural Big Skies Festival is a celebration of all the sights, tastes and unique experiences the Western Downs has to offer. Set up camp if you want a true blue Aussie outback experience at the Jimbour Station Camp area, or if that’s not for you, rest your head at one of the many motel options.

The Festival kicks off with the 106th Dalby Picnic Races on Saturday and continues on Wednesday with a free and exclusive tour of the Dalby Saleyards where you can experience sale day and look around the state of the art facility that is the largest same-day prime and store cattle sale. At night, enjoy a free movie under the stars at the Jimbour station.

On Thursday and Friday, explore the Western Downs and in the evening enjoy a camp oven experience. On Friday night you can also take part in a free Big Night Sky: Guided Tour of the Galaxy. Trust us, the stars are so much brighter in the country. It’s not to be missed.

On the following Saturday, enjoy some of Australia’s best rock n roll tunes with Day On The Plain at the Jimbour Amphitheatre (FYI, you can enter to win free tix here!) The line up is not to be missed with Richard Clapton, Glenn Shorrock, Frankie J Holden & Wilbur Wilde, Eurogliders, Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows and Wendy Matthews.

To wrap up a jam-packed week on Sunday, end your Big Skies experience on a high with a hot air balloon ride where you will be treated to a spectacular panoramic view of the Jimbour plain. Don’t like heights? You can still experience the magic of the hot air balloons safely on the ground with an incredible breakfast overlooking the balloons rising.

The fun doesn’t stop there! If you are keen for more there is a Food and Fibre showcase, which will be showing off everything locally grown and with celebrity foodie Hayden Quinn. There will be a Cinema Under the Stars with the Big Skies Short Film Festival, Camp Oven Experience, and sampling of produce and, of course, entertainment from the local region.
