We Asked The Women Behind Queensland’s Favourite Bakeries Where They Go To Eat

After Service

By Natalie McGowan | 28th April 2026
It’s the age-old question: where do chefs actually go to eat? We asked two of Queensland’s best pastry chefs and restaurateurs from Brisbane and the Gold Coast to share the places and dishes they return to again and again. From humble comfort food to hidden gems, these are the restaurants, cafes, and spots they genuinely love.

Caroline Toh

Bella & Tortie, Stafford

As Senior Pastry Chef at Bella & Tortie – a cult suburban bakery that operates just two days a week and regularly sells out – Caroline is as passionate about eating as she is about baking. With Singaporean and Malaysian heritage, food has always been in her blood.

Tarte Bakery & Cafe, Burleigh Heads

“Whenever I am in the Gold Coast, I head straight to Tarte for breakfast and pastries. I love the chicken and crumpets and their kouign-amann. Their coffee is also top-notch!”

Emily Yeoh, Paddington

“If I am in the mood for Asian food that tastes like home, Emily Yeoh is always my top pick, especially her signature Singapore chilli crab”

TungLok Peking Duck, Singapore

“My favourite place to eat in the world is (obviously) in Singapore. I love the traditional Chinese cuisine in TungLok and their Peking duck is to die for. Also, a special shoutout to 328 Laksa in Katong, which is on the Michelin guide, because no trip to Singapore is complete without a bowl of laksa – and this is the very best in the world.”

Chloe Watts

Tarte Beach House, Currumbin & Tarte Bakery & Café, Burleigh Heads

A self-professed lover of all things food and décor, Chloe is a busy mother of two and the owner of the Gold Coast’s Tarte Group – home to Currumbin’s Tarte Beach House and Burleigh’s Tarte Bakery & Cafe.

Short Grain, Fortitude Valley

“Long Grain was an old favourite from my years living in Sydney and I was so happy when Martin opened in Brisbane. There are so many good dishes here, but it’s hard to pass up on the OG’s: caramelised pork hock and eggnet salad.”

Norté, Mermaid Beach

“At the moment, I’m loving Norté. It’s consistently good, full of vibrant, well-thought-out flavours, and offers enough variety to keep you coming back for more. The crab churro with cucumber, apple, and jalapeño is so well balanced and so well executed.”

La Renommée, Paris

“At La Renommée, everything from the stunning decor and atmosphere to the flawless execution of every dish was simply outstanding. I wouldn’t normally name a dessert above all else, but my goodness, the Tarte Tatin (ironic, I know) was flawless. Flaky, juicy, and perfectly caramelised.”
