Meet Shaman: Brisbane’s Sultry Basement Bar That Channels The Retro Underground Scene

Mood and mixology

By Bianca Licina | 12th November 2025

If you’re the type to follow the glow of a good secret, there’s a new name to whisper among Brisbane’s late-night set: Shaman. Brought to you by the team behind Alice Bar and Frog’s Hollow Saloon, this subterranean newcomer channels all the moody allure and impeccable attention to detail you’d expect from the city’s reigning masters of cocktail culture.

Hidden beneath Edward Street in a heritage-listed, century-old warehouse, Shaman is where Latin spirit meets Brisbane cool — a sultry underground bar that makes you forget what time it is (and honestly, who cares?).

The vibe

Descend the narrow staircase and you’re instantly transported. The air hums with old-world charm – exposed brick walls, flickering red tealights, and the soft glow of leadlight lamps cast shadows that dance across the room. The space oozes sophistication and nostalgia, paying homage to Brisbane’s retro underground bar scene. Every detail feels intentional – from the scattered wooden tables to the framed photographs lining the walls – creating an atmosphere that’s equal parts energetic and intimate, where conversations linger and last drinks come too soon.

The drinks

As you’d expect, the drinks are just as considered. Shaman’s back bar is a sight to behold – a collection of over 50 tequilas, 100 rums, and a refined list of South American wines that speak to its sultry spirit. Beer lovers, take note: there’s just one on offer, Estrella, served the old-fashioned way — straight from the crate.

Cocktails are divided into three distinct moods.

  • The Always On features their timeless trio — a Daiquiri, Margarita, and Old Fashioned — classic, flawless, and always available.
  • The Sometimes On menu offers house favourites and original creations like Bow & Arrow, El Presidente, and Sandilla — each with its own story and a hint of mischief.
  • The Something Silly delivers limited-edition party concoctions that change with the whim of the bartenders. To perfect the balance between sour and sweet, all citrus is freshly juiced to order — a small but signature touch that sets Shaman apart.

The sounds

As for the soundtrack? Think Carlos Santana, the very artist the bar takes its name from. His signature fusion of Latin, soul, and jazz fills the space, adding to the smoky allure. It’s the kind of music that makes you want to stay longer – a hypnotic, slow-burning rhythm that syncs perfectly with the hum of clinking glasses.

The experience

Open daily from 3 PM to midnight, Shaman is an escape from the ordinary – a bar that’s as much about mood as it is about mixology. It’s a place for dreamers, deep thinkers, and anyone looking to disappear underground for a night of slow sips, good music, and great company.

So, when the city feels too loud, head downstairs and let Shaman work its magic.
