A Breezy New Japanese Alfresco Restaurant Has Opened On James Street

Chopsticks at the ready

You’ve heard of Hideki — the moody, fine-dining yakitori spot that turned Burnett Lane into a late-night Japanese hotspot. But did you know they’ve just launched Hideki 2.0 on Brisbane’s hottest strip?

Located beside Sixes and Sevens and right in front of P. Johnson, Hideki’s second outpost has quietly opened on James Street — and trust us, it’s going to be a hit. Fully alfresco and effortlessly cool, it turns a once-empty space into the perfect perch for sushi, sake and street-watching.

So, how does it differ from the OG?

James Street’s Hideki delivers the same refined flavours, but in a more casual, breezy setting. It’s less moody, more vibey — a spot where you could easily lose track of time, caught between good company and the buzz of the street.

Come nightfall, the energy ramps up — think flowing drinks, upbeat tunes, and the kind of atmosphere you don’t want to leave.

The design, by Sophia Klemenz-Ghanem of Klemenza, is clean and striking, with bold red accents that make it unmissable. The menu echoes their Burnett Lane offering but puts more focus on sushi, with bento boxes making a play for your lunchtime cravings. Whether you’re popping in for a quick bite or settling in for an indulgent dinner, Hideki James Street delivers.

So, who’s behind it?

It all stems from a friendship that spans three generations. Wasim Ghanem (of Brisbane hospitality royalty, the Ghanem Group) and Joe Chagoury share a deep love for Japanese culture, sparked by countless trips to Japan. After dabbling in ramen ventures and pivoting to noodle-making during Covid, the pair returned to their original vision: bringing Japanese-style service and standout dining to Brisbane. Burnett Lane was the first step. James Street is the next. And with plans to go interstate, it’s clear these two are just getting started.

Open for lunch and dinner — book in and prepare to feast.
