Comuna Cantina Has Expanded Its Foodie Footprint To Newstead
Let's taco 'bout it
By Cali Westmoreland | 26th March 2026Some restaurants not only serve food, but they also set a whole mood. Comuna Cantina has always been one of those places. The kind you can slip into easily with friends, where the energy is warm, the welcome is genuine, and long lunches turn into late dinners and drinks.
Built on a spirit of community and connection, this Brisbane favourite has made a name for itself as a go-to for relaxed, feel-good dining. Now, after five years of searching for the right next step, Comuna has headed north with a landmark new opening in Newstead – bringing its signature ease, flavour, and sense of community to a fresh corner of the city.
Comuna Cantina’s new home
For anyone who’s dreamed about Comuna’s tacos, this next chapter feels inevitable. Newstead has long been whispered as the suburb that just makes sense – green, open, walkable, and alive with energy. Add its forward-thinking growth, and it’s hard to imagine a more natural place for Comuna to settle.
The new venue sits by the river, framed by parklands. With gentle breezes and open sightlines, the setting invites people to slow down, gather, and soak it all in. “Newstead was a location our guests kept asking for,” says founder Tim Johnson. “But more than that, it felt right for our brand. The river, the parklands, and the openness of the area naturally create a space where everyone can feel at home. This is us embracing the Newstead lifestyle.”

Designed for Brissy life
Design-wise, Comuna leans into its most relaxed, sun-washed self. The result is a venue built for connection – no special occasion required. Morning coffee can slip into long lunches, family afternoons blur into golden-hour cocktails, and vibrant nights can thrive without fuss. Hospitality that meets you where you are, whenever you turn up.
A sense of style
This new chapter signals a quiet evolution for the brand – one that feels both elevated and instinctively true to its roots. The space, designed by Alkot Studio, reimagines Comuna’s signature warmth through a more refined, immersive lens, where every detail has been carefully considered rather than overstated.
There’s a richness to the interiors that unfolds gradually. Layered textures, tactile materials, and a design-led depth invite you to settle in. Elsewhere, subtle references to Latin hacienda living meet a palette drawn from the vibrancy of Latino culture – earthy, sun-washed, and quietly expressive. The result is a space that feels like a familiar, yet elevated interpretation of Comuna’s voice.
In a city constantly growing both upward and outward, Comuna Newstead feels grounded, rooted in its environment, and most certainly worth a return visit. And based on what we saw at their recent opening event, you won’t want to sleep on this new location and all the fabulous food and drink on the menu.
