Modern Asian Meets James Street Cool At New Tassis Venue, Aunty
Aunty knows best
By Bianca Licina | 24th July 2025She’s bold, she’s sophisticated, she’s got centuries of flavour under her belt — and no, she’s not your average aunty. In a move that’s set to shake up the Fortitude Valley dining scene, Brisbane hospitality powerhouse The Tassis Group has finally lifted the lid on its most ambitious project yet: Aunty — a slick, modern-Asian restaurant landing in late 2025.
A prime spot in the heart of the valley
Taking over the coveted 11 Wandoo Street address (yep, the one formerly home to City Winery and Campos), Aunty is ready to bring the heat – think timeless Asian culinary traditions delivered with edge, elegance, and a whole lot of heart. She’s the twelfth addition to The Tassis Group’s growing empire, and she’s setting up shop right in the heart of James Street’s ever-evolving food and fashion district — just steps away from sibling venue Fatcow.
A chef with a worldly edge
And special it will be. At the helm is Chef Salvatore de Ponte — a name that might not scream Cantonese at first glance, but don’t be fooled. With over 15 years working in top kitchens across Australia, Asia, London, and Italy, Chef de Ponte brings a unique culinary perspective that fuses technical brilliance with a genuine reverence for Cantonese culture. Expect old-world techniques. Modern artistry. And a menu that plays respectfully with tradition while rewriting the rulebook.
Inside the space
Design-wise, Aunty will strike that perfect balance between moody intimacy and polished sophistication, tapping into the essence of traditional Cantonese teahouses — but make it James Street. Think layered textures, ambient lighting, and flexible spaces made for everything from date nights to long, lazy yum cha sessions.
A menu made with love
And the food? Oh, the food. The menu will span all the greatest hits — from hand-folded dim sum and crispy spring rolls to banquet-style dishes starring premium Peking duck, glistening seafood, and seasonal veggies prepped to perfection. Come weekends, you can even settle in for proper yum cha, just like Aunty would want.
More than a restaurant
Because in many Asian cultures, “aunty” is more than just a nickname — it’s a feeling. Aunty is the one who insists you’ve not eaten enough, who remembers exactly how you take your tea, and who’ll always have room for one more at the table. It’s comfort, culture, and culinary care — all wrapped up in two syllables.
Mark your calendars
So, fluff your hair, iron your shirt, and clear your calendar. Because Aunty is rolling into town — and Brisbane’s dining scene will never be the same.
Aunty is set to open at 11 Wandoo Street, Fortitude Valley in the back half of 2025. Stay tuned for more info.
