Meet Aunty: Bold, Sophisticated, & Bringing Modern Asian To Fortitude Valley

Aunty knows best

By Bianca Licina | 20th January 2026

She’s bold, she’s sophisticated, and she’s got centuries of flavour under her belt. In a move that’s set to shake up the Fortitude Valley dining scene, Brisbane hospitality powerhouse Tassis Group are launching their twelfth venue: Aunty, a slick, modern-Asian restaurant opening on 5 February.

A prime spot in the heart of the valley

Taking over the coveted 11 Wandoo Street address (yep, the one formerly home to City Winery and Campos), Aunty is ready to bring the heat – think timeless Asian culinary traditions delivered with edge, elegance, and a whole lot of heart. She’s the twelfth addition to The Tassis Group’s growing empire, and she’s setting up shop right in the heart of James Street’s ever-evolving food and fashion district — just steps away from one of the group’s other venues, Fatcow.

Inside the space

Design-wise, Aunty strikes the perfect balance between moody intimacy and polished sophistication, capturing the essence of a traditional Cantonese teahouse, but reimagined for James Street’s crowd. Spanning 400sqm and seating up to 100 guests, the space is crafted for intimate dining, using levels, booths, and curtains to transform a single room into multiple secluded corners. Rich textures mirror the depth of the menu: warm timbers, luxurious marble, and deep green banquette seating create a tactile, inviting atmosphere. For those seeking an elevated experience, a private dining room accommodates up to 24 guests.

As Tassis Group founder Michael Tassis puts it: “Aunty is elegant, but she’s not precious. This is a venue that’s polished and considered, but still warm. It’s about confidence… knowing exactly who you are and doing it well.”

Aunty says feast!

The menu at Aunty is all about Modern Asian cuisine with a nod to traditional techniques, designed for sharing and generous portions. Highlights include whole chilli mudcrab from the live tank, half duck two ways, and char siu pork neck, each cooked with confidence and precision. A dedicated dim sum menu lets guests move between delicate small plates and centre-of-table showstoppers, while banquets (including a vegetarian option) make group dining effortless. A standout in the kitchen is the woodfire grill, adding a subtle smokiness and depth to select dishes.

Lunch and early evenings aren’t overlooked either, a cheeky nod to Aunty’s belief that good food shouldn’t wait for dinner.

Drinks are just as considered. Aunty’s wine list spans around 250 labels, while the cocktail menu features over 10 original serves inspired by Asian flavours, all executed with a contemporary twist.

More than a restaurant

Because in many Asian cultures, “aunty” is more than just a nickname — it’s a feeling. Aunty is the one who insists you’ve not eaten enough, who remembers exactly how you take your tea, and who’ll always have room for one more at the table. It’s comfort, culture, and culinary care — all wrapped up in two syllables.

Mark your calendars

So, fluff your hair, iron your shirt, and clear your calendar – Aunty is coming to town. Bookings are now open so make your reservation here.
