La Dolce Vita: With Silk Laundry’s Katie Kolodinski

The life of a creative director, mother and wife!

By Kiri Johnston | 9th April 2019

With brick-and-mortar stores in Brisbane, the GC and now Canada, Gold Coast-born label Silk Laundry isn’t slowing down anytime soon! Founder and Creative Director Katie Kolodinski continues to inspire women around the world with her effortless and timeless designs. Her mission is to encourage people to choose exceptional quality pieces over mass-produced products.

You can find beautiful silk slip dresses, full length skirts, loose tees, boyfriend shirts, and all the minimal staples every women needs in her wardrobe. These delicate pieces can be worn all year long, pared back for summer or worn with a long coat and boots for the cooler months. You can find their stores on James Street in Brisbane, Pacific Fair Broadbeach at The Gold Coast, and now Montréal in Canada.

As one of our favourite Aussie labels, we decided to find out more about the creative mind behind Silk Laundry. Wife and mother of two, Katie gives us insight into her life whilst currently living in Montréal. Her move to Canada inspired the launch of their newest store and latest project!

Describe your personal style? Classic, boyish, elegant.

The first thing you did this morning? Hugged my kids.

Last time you laughed out loud (and what about)?
My child playing in the snow with freeze-dried hydrangeas. He is one and was throwing them up in the air. He thought it was the best thing in the world!
What’s the key to your happiness? Sleep and great baguettes.

One fashion brand to wear for the rest of your life? Silk Laundry, of course.

Your karaoke song? I have never actually ever done karaoke. I am pretty shy.

Signature scent? It changes with the seasons. Comme des Garcons White is my go-to right now in the Canadian winter.

What’s your favourite cafe/restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner? In Montréal, it is hands down Lemeac after 10pm.

Skin tip that works for you? Keep applying oil in the winter.

On your days off what do you like to do? Eat crepes, drink coffee and enjoy drawing with my kids.

Describe Silk Laundry in three words? I will give you four: LUXE, FEMININE, ARTISTIC, REAL.

Instant pick-me-up? Fresh flowers in the home.

If money was no object, what would be your dream holiday? I would really love to go and volunteer at an animal refuge aimed at rescue and protection of African wildlife.

Recommended can’t-put-down read? The Goldfinch is one of my all-time favorite books.

Watching on Netflix? Roma was incredible. But for a series I am watching a couple French series, Call My Agent and The Hookup.
What motivates you or keeps you focused? I love work so it’s not hard to stay motivated. I lose focus easily but I have my mind on so many different aspects of the business so it is easy to wander.

Soul country (as in soul partner)? Italy.

Last holiday destination? Cuba.

Three words your mum/dad/partner would use to describe you (choose which person)? At my wedding, my dad described me as a “bulldog”. I think he meant it as a good thing that I have worked hard to get to where I am and I don’t stop till I am satisfied. My husband describes me as creative, impatient, generous and impassioned.

Stuck in traffic, where does your mind wander? It wanders to the problem with cars and pollution and petrol and the government. Why we all need to drive our own cars with usually only one person inside and why isn’t public transport better in most places. We are waiting until we can buy an electric car and enjoy walking to the store or for school drop off in the meantime.
