When it comes to modern aesthetics, anything non-invasive and needle-free instantly gets my attention. As someone who has fainted at the mere sight of a needle since childhood (yes, really), I have a very real mental block when it comes to injectables. So, while I completely understand why Botox and other age-prevention techniques have a cult following – those results don’t lie – they’ve never quite felt like the right fit for me.
A new kind of workout – for your face
Enter WonderFace at Ascension Cosmetic Medicine in New Farm. Marketed as “Pilates for your face” and “facial fitness,” it promised sculpted results without a single injection. My curiosity was officially piqued!
This isn’t a skin treatment in the traditional sense. WonderFace works on the muscles of the face – retraining and reawakening them to help re-establish that firm, youthful connection between skin and muscle that softens as we age. It’s like a personal trainer for your face, except the session is only 25 minutes and you don’t leave sore and sweaty.
In expert hands at Ascension
Dr. Scott Allison’s team at Ascension made the whole process feel reassuringly clinical, yet relaxed. After an initial consultation and a set of ‘before’ photos (gulp), I embarked on a treatment plan involving four sessions across two weeks, and trust me, it’s a pleasure stepping foot into their beautiful, serene space.
What the treatment feels like
The treatment itself is quite the experience. Adhesive pads are placed on your forehead, cheeks, and under the chin, then activated using a clever combo of synchronised neuromuscular stimulation and radiofrequency through a control screen. In real terms? It’s a mix of heat and tiny electrical pulses that cause your facial muscles to contract for about 10 seconds at a time. It’s a completely new sensation – like your face is doing mini crunches without you even trying.
Was it comfortable? At times, it pushed my limits. But with each session, I built tolerance and actually started looking forward to the next one. The guiding rule? The greater the intensity (within your comfort zone), the better the results. And I was all in.
Downtime? Nuh-uh
One of my favourite parts? Zero downtime. After each session, I’d stroll out of the clinic and get on with my day – no redness, no puffiness, no awkward explanations (or big sunnies).
So, did it actually work?
Now for the big question: Was it worth it?
Absolutely. The results were undeniably there. Going into this, I was hoping to soften my wrinkles, smooth out my lines, and see some sort of noticeable change. And boy, was I impressed. My side profile looked more lifted. Crow’s feet? Softened. Smile lines? Less visible. And my jawline – particularly under the chin – had more definition. Bonus surprise: my skin looked fresher overall, even though the treatment isn’t designed to target the skin directly.

Vanity, but make it empowering
There’s something deeply motivating (and yes, a little vain) about looking in the mirror and seeing a face that appears just a little slimmer, a little more awake. It’s not about chasing youth – it’s about feeling confident in the reflection staring back at you.
As for those recommended follow-up treatments every three months? Let’s just say they’ve made their way to the top of my beauty to-do list.
