The Biggest Hair Trends For 2021

The Biggest Hair Trends For 2021

Turn heads in 2021 with these mane attractions

By Astrid Taemets | 4th February 2021

New year, new ‘do! Take it from hair experts Jaye Edwards of Edwards & Co salons, Mikki Auld of Mikki Auld Hairdressing and Tom Smith, evo hair’s resident hair-guru, 2021 is all about taking the plunge with bold and daring looks.

After spending most of 2020 skipping trims and attempting at-home dye jobs (guilty as charged), there’s no time like the present to finally experiment with your ‘do. From shaggy cuts to unexpected colours and retro styles, the best looks for this year are all about making changes. It’s time to shake things up in 2021!

Go for bronze

Strong, natural-looking copper, peach and strawberry blonde tones are making a huge comeback this year, and look sweet as hell on most skin types. If this is your first venture into a hue from this peachy, rose gold spectrum – get excited!  You’ll love how it naturally flushes your skin and adds warmth. More ‘born with it’, less ‘from the bottle’ vibes are comin’ your way.

So French, so chic

The lob (that’s ‘long bob’ for those not in the know), has reigned supreme as one of the biggest hair trends of recent years, but it’s time the style took a backseat! Cue the French bob (oh la la!), which Jaye says will really shine in spring. “The French bob is cheekbone-skimming and effortlessly chic. It not only saves on blow-drying time, but nails the relaxed vibe we love so much here in Australia. It’s the perfect style for those wanting to embrace a more individual look, that’s full of volume and texture.” Bonjour beautiful bouncy mane, we’ve been waiting for you.

Get shagged

ICYMI: shaggy mullets that are really layered with a rock and roll edge are big news atm (have you been following Miley Cyrus’ mullet journey?) A little more grown out and refined than your classic mullet, Tom Smith, evo’s resident hair expert, says the head hugging texture is ideal for those who love a low maintenance look that requires little to no styling.

Bangers, baby!

The 70s are back in action, thanks to our love affair with their bouncy hairstyles a la Farrah Fawcett. While there’s been a few contemporary updates made to the style over the years, Jaye says the choppy, modern interpretation is ideal for those with longer face shapes. “With bangs parted in the middle and cut to curve at the cheekbones, this style is soft and effortless, and works with long, lob-length and French-bobs, too.”

The Brady Bunch

Carol Brady, is that you? Curtain bangs and reverse curls are all the rage RN, and if you don’t believe us, just check out this epic retro-inspired style by Mikki Auld. Best suited to those with mid-length hair, the style is a funky fresh way to add dimension and shine to your mane.

Subtle, much?

Stepping away from the super high contrast face framing look that was massive last winter, naturally coloured hairlines are gaining popularity. A bright, highlighted frame around your face customised after balayage or foiling will really lift your complexion and make your colour pop with shine and dimension, especially when curled. It also helps stretch out the longevity of a colour (read: minimal upkeep is required), meaning less trips to the salon and more dough in your pocket.
