Does Investing In Your Skin Earlier Actually Pay Off Later? We Ask An Expert To Find Out

what actually works

By Victoria Lewis | 29th October 2026

It should come as no surprise to anyone that in 2026, skincare is one of the most talked-about beauty categories, especially in the anti-aging space. From gua sha to ice facials, everyone has a different take on how to keep your skin healthier for longer, but does investing in your skin earlier really pay off in the long run?

We here at Style wanted to settle the score once and for all, so we took to asking Spa Manager and Senior Advanced Laser and Dermal Therapist, Danni Morrice, from TFP Spa, one of Brisbane’s top aesthetic and clinical spa destinations: Is there really such a thing as preventative skincare?

Here’s what she had to say on skin health longevity, preventative skincare, and the unexpected things that are negatively affecting our skin on the daily.

Why is it worth investing in your skin before signs of ageing or skin concerns actually appear?

It’s always better to be preventative than reactive. Investing in your skin early can help delay the first signs of ageing, and it’s much easier to protect your canvas than to correct pigmentation and other signs of oxidative stress later on. At the end of the day, our goal is to help every client feel confident in their own skin and to enhance their natural beauty.

What are some ways the skin ages from everyday activities that we might not think about?

Sun exposure is the big one. UV causes oxidative stress in the skin, which shows up as pigmentation, enlarged pores, redness, and even breakouts. And it’s not just time at the beach. We’re exposed every day in the car or sitting by a window at work, and on top of that we spend hours under blue light from our phones and laptops. Stress plays a bigger part than most people realise too, because those cortisol spikes take a real toll on the skin.

Another one that often gets overlooked is using products that aren’t right for your skin type or what you’re trying to achieve. It’s so easy to follow the latest TikTok trend or online hack, but without having your skin assessed by a professional, it can do more harm than good. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for the next. Investing in a consultation upfront will save you money in the long run, because you’re not wasting it on products and treatments that aren’t suited to you.

What are some examples of preventative skincare people should be considering in their 20s, 30s and 40s?

Whatever your age, the best place to start is a consultation with a skin professional who can properly assess your skin and build you a simple, effective routine.

In your 20s, keep it simple. Wear SPF every day and focus on hydration to support your skin barrier. The habits you build now will pay off later.

In your 30s, it’s a great time to introduce a retinol if your skin can tolerate it, along with a vitamin C serum in the mornings. Your daily SPF is still non-negotiable.

In your 40s, don’t stop at your jawline. Bring your neck and décolletage into your routine, as they’re often where ageing shows first.

As we get older, hormones and life changes affect our skin, so it’s important to reassess your homecare along the way. What your skin needed five years ago may not be what it needs now.

What are some of your top skin treatments that are worth investing in for long-term skin health?

SkinPen microneedling is always at the top of my list. It creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which triggers collagen production and speeds up cell turnover. It’s brilliant for age management and for improving the look of pores and acne scarring.

BBL and Moxi together are the gold standard for what we call collagen banking, which means building up your collagen reserves now so your skin ages better later. They also target pigmentation and sun damage, and improve pores, tone, texture, and even active acne.

Hydrafacial is a great all-rounder for skin health, and you can have it any time of year. Its patented vortex technology cleanses, extracts, and hydrates the skin, and we tailor every treatment with customised boosters and LED. You walk out with smoother, healthier-looking skin straight away.

If someone is new to clinical skincare treatments, where should they start?

It may sound like a cliché, but I’d start with a personalised consultation. It’s a chance to talk through your goals and take a proper look at what your skin actually needs to be healthy. From there, your therapist can recommend a gentle first treatment, like a Hydrafacial, to ease you in.

When it comes to your routine at home, I like to break it down into the core four: cleanse, correct, hydrate, and protect. If you focus on those, you’ll start to see results within the first few months.

Whatever else you do, wear SPF every day and be consistent. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it takes time to see the rewards. Looking after it is a lifelong commitment to yourself, but that doesn’t mean it has to be complicated. It can be simple and effective.

You heard Danni; now is a good a time to start on that skincare journey as any. Whether you’re keen to try a doctor-led treatment or looking for a restorative spa ritual, book your complimentary consultation with the expert team, including Danni herself, at TFP Spa Newstead here.
