The Awkward Questions You Don't Want to Ask Your Beauty Therapist

The Awkward Questions You Don't Want to Ask Your Beauty Therapist

... so you Google them instead.

We’ve all been there. The beauty therapist asks you to get undressed/help them with something and all of a sudden you worry you’ve been doing everything wrong your entire life. And instead of asking, you try your best and end up in a super awkward situation.

So let’s just skip that part of your next appointment and get right to the point. We asked the team at Brazilian Beauty all those awkward beauty questions so you don’t have to. You’re welcome.

Can I use my phone in a salon?

No phone for you! Using a phone during a treatment is a big no-no as it can make it more difficult for the beauty therapist to do their job. You might need to pay attention or you might drop your phone when you least expect it. Unless your pet (OK, or a family member) is super sick, just turn your phone off and enjoy the treatment.

How late is too late?

Things happen. You get stuck in traffic or can’t find a car park or fall down a flight of stairs – totally understandable. But please try to be either a bit early or on time for your appointment. If you rock up more than 15 minutes after your appointment was supposed to start, it starts putting your beauty therapist under pressure because they don’t want to inconvenience the clients after you.

As soon as you realise you’re going to be late, call your salon to give them a heads-up! If you know you’re going to be more than 15 minutes late, consider rescheduling your appointment altogether. The general rule is the more notice the better!

Underwear or no underwear during salon services?

If in doubt, wear your underwear. We can easily work around your underwear during a massage and with most spray tans and waxes we’ll give out disposable underwear. They may not be flattering but they serve a purpose!

Should I shower before my appointment?

If you've just been to the gym, absolutely! Or if you've been sweating at all, to be honest. While your salon will provide wipes for a quick clean, if you're worried about any smells or just want to be super polite then a quick shower won't hurt.

How do I prepare for my Brazilian?

A Brazilian wax is one of the most “close contact” services that salons offer and it does require a bit of prep. Hygiene is key: use the wipes that salons provide (even if you think you’re good to go) and don’t come straight from a sweaty workout.

If you’re nervous, please remember that we’ve seen countless vaginas in our time – we’re too busy ensuring a great treatment to judge you for whatever you’re worried about! It’s an intimate treatment so give us all the intimate details and we’ll look after you as best we can.

Can I get a beauty treatment while on my period?

It really depends on what kind of treatment you're having done. Being on your period can lower your pain threshold so a run-of-the-mill wax may become excruciating and even a massage can be painful.

If you are unable to reschedule an appointment, you should come clean (preferably freshly-showered) and with a new tampon inserted. Let your beauty therapist know as soon as possible so that they can adjust the intensity of your treatment and/or avoid the tampon string if need be. Nobody wants that getting tangled up in hot wax. Please be aware that beauty therapists are at liberty to refuse treatment while you're on your period for hygiene reasons and to ensure that you don't experience any discomfort.

Can I have sex before my appointment?

In short, yes. But just like with your period, if you've got something else going on down there you should shower before your appointment and ensure that everything is spick and span for your beauty therapist. Things could get awkward really quickly if there's any, ahem, evidence of your romance left behind.

I’m self-conscious about my body. What can I do?

It probably sounds super unhelpful but just try not to stress. We’re professionals and we only want to give you the best service possible; we’re not here to judge or gawk at any part of your body that you’re uncomfortable about. If you’re REALLY concerned then please let us know and we’ll do our best to find a solution that will help you feel as comfortable as possible.

Do I have to make small talk while you’re staring at my bits?

Not at all! We love to get to know clients but we do understand that many of our clients are just in the mood to switch off. We’re taught from early on to let the client initiate the conversation; if you’re not in the mood, just be honest and say you want to relax.
