8 Makeup Essentials Every Woman Needs

8 Makeup Essentials Every Woman Needs

No cosmetic case is complete without these!

By Elle Raison | 16th June 2016

OK, we might complain about wearing makeup every so often but it’s actually really fun to play with. And it’s nice to be able to change our lip colour or make our eyes pop whenever we want. Whether you like to wear a lot of makeup or just a little bit, there are some makeup essentials everyone should have in their cosmetics case.

Uh-uh. None of that “But I only wear it every now and again so I don’t need these things” or “I don’t even know how to apply it so what’s the use?”. Experts say these are essential and the Style girls agree. Everyone. Should. Have. These. Basics.

The good news is it’s super easy! I’ve done the research so you don’t have to.

1. Moisturiser

Makeup Essentials: Moisturiser

Myer Estée Lauder Hydrationist Maximum Moisture Lotion $75; Go-To Very Useful Face Cream $41; Myer Jurlique Balancing Day Cream from $50

Dry skin or oily skin – it doesn’t matter. Everyone should be using a face moisturiser morning and night. Moisturising acts as a barrier between you and the environment, both protecting and nourishing the sensitive skin on your face. However, make sure your moisturiser is based on your skin type. If you’re not into anything fancy (or trying to save some dollar dollar bills, y’all), this simple Cetaphil one will do the trick.

2. SPF

Makeup Essentials: SPF

Adore Beauty Invisible Zinc Facial Moisturiser SPF 30+; Adore Beauty Skinstitut Age Defence SPF 50+ $31.50; Aesop Protective Body Lotion SPF 50

Every beautician will tell you that SPF is a MUST. Every day. No matter the weather. But wearing sunscreen on your face is easier said than done. Does anyone else seem to break out as soon as they lather it on? I know I do. But there’s a solution to this! Invest in a sunscreen that is made specifically for the face. They are often more lightweight than regular sunscreen while being just as effective. If you’re still not convinced, make sure that your foundation is at least SPF 15.

3. Base

Makeup Essentials: Base

The Base by Lara Bingle LB Cream $26; Mecca BareMinerals Original SPF 15 Foundation $42; Issada Mineral Velvet Cream Foundation $69

No matter whether you wear makeup occasionally or all the time, you should find a base layer you feel comfortable in. There are loads of options on offer, from sheer powders to full coverage powders, tinted moisturiser, BB/CC/DD cream and good old-fashioned liquid foundation. I like to have both a powder foundation and a liquid foundation so that I can layer it depending on how much coverage I would like.

4. Cheek colour

Makeup Essentials: Cheek colour

Priceline Physicians Formula Argan Wear Ultra-Nourishing Argan Oil Blush $21.95; Mecca Nars Laguna Orgasm Duo $62; Jane Iredale Purepressed Blush $55

Now that you have a solid foundation, you can start to paint your beautiful canvas! Adding some colour to your cheeks will give you a glow and bring your face to life. Available in lots of colours and forms, play around until you find a blusher or bronzer that you love!

5. Mascara

Makeup Essentials: Mascara

Paula’s Choice Endless Lash Mascara $22; Priceline Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara $21.95; David Jones Clinique High Lengths Mascara $38

Make your eyes pop with a lashing of mascara. This is probably the simplest way to dress up a natural face and there are so many to choose from depending on the result you want. Do you want longer lashes? Choose a lengthening mascara. Fancy fuller lashes? A volumising mascara will be your best friend!

6. Eyebrow filler

Makeup Essentials: Brows

Poni Cosmetics Poni Brow Powder $14.95, Poni Wax $12.95 and Pro Brow Brush $15; Mecca Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil $50; Myer Benefit Gimme Brow $39

In case you’ve been living under a rock, styled eyebrows are currently all the rage. If you haven’t tried filling yours in, you really should! It will change your face forever. No really, it will. Need some inspo? Here are some of the best celebrity eyebrows to oooh and ahh over before you go to one of our fave brow specialists to learn more.

7. A signature lip colour

Makeup Essentials: Lip colour

Curtis Collection Glam Lipstick $33; Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G in Nude Kate $48; Mecca Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm $35

The easiest way to dress up an outfit or take your workwear to the bar is by popping on some lippy. You don’t need to be a red lips gal, but you should definitely have a signature colour – whether that comes in a gloss, stain or cream form – that gives you a confidence boost and suits your skin tone.

8. Quality brushes

Makeup Essentials: Brushes

Lulu & Lipstick Brush Set $120; Sephora Zoeva Classic Face Set 6 Makeup Brushes $128; Nude by Nature Essential Collection Brush Set $39.95

Ahhh, the tools of the trade! A great set of brushes will make the process of applying your makeup so much easier and the finished product even more flawless. You don’t have to spend a fortune either. There are some really great sets for under $50!
