We appreciate Ireland for many reasons. Some related to culture and history, some related to Liam Neeson and many related to the Irishman’s best friend, potato.
The starchy wonder is clearly the most versatile food in the history of the world, but this time we dare you to ditch the potato bake, fries and mash and instead opt for all the beauty benefits the humble potato has to offer. (Geez, up your game every other vegetable!)
Beauty purposes, you ask? Why YES. OK, we weren’t too sure either but we’ve totally uncovered seven ways that our underground dwelling friend can help your skin and hair look awesome! Your friends and family will be so green with envy they’ll be mistaken for decorations in a St Patrick’s Day parade.
Put down that unoriginal face cream and say “top o’ the morning” to these tips.
1. Say Goodbye to Blemishes
Nobody enjoys facial blemishes. NOBODY. But still they insist on lingering and frustrating us beyond belief. By using cold potato juice as a daily facial rinse, you can help say goodbye to unwanted spots and blotches thanks to awesome starches. Grate your potato and refrigerate the juice to keep it cool and fresh.
2. Heal Your Sunburn
Sunburn can be a pain in the neck (and arms, legs, face and back) if you don’t not deal with it ASAP. Potatoes are great for treating sunburned skin and can even help relieve the pain. Cut a cold potato into thin slices and place them over the affected areas to soothe and cool skin.
3. Get Rid of Dark Circles
Yep, the humble 'tater can even act as a natural skin brightener to help diminish the appearance of dark circles under eyes. Peel and slice a raw potato into large pieces (enough to cover the eye area) then get two pieces of cloth and wrap a piece of potato into each. Place the cloths over your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes before washing off with warm water. Repeat regularly and watch the magic happen.
4. Banish Wrinkles
Did you know spuds are an effective anti-aging treatment? Well, you do now! Dip a cotton ball or soft cloth into potato juice and dab your face gently to keep your skin soft and glowing.
5. Remove Dead Skin Cells
Potatoes can also be used to remove dead skin cells from the face. Apply grated, peeled potato to the skin for 10 minutes and rinse with warm water. Doing so regularly will keep your skin feeling fresh and soft as a baby’s bottom.
6. Reduce the Appearance of Scars
A simple potato and lemon mix can go a long way! Blend potato and lemon juice and apply to any facial scars or marks. Leave the mixture on the area for 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Use this tip regularly to look totally #flawless.
7. Fight Grey Hairs
If those darn grey hairs are niggling their way into your scalp, potato has got your back. Boil potato peels in water until it becomes stained. Use this water as a last rinse after shampooing your hair to help darken greys.
