Kicks that will last through kick-ons and more pretzels, dirndls and lederhosen than you can poke a stein at.
With only a month until Australia’s largest German Festival kicks off for 2017, we’ve sussed out the top 10 things you can expect to see and do at the booziest festival in town.
1. ANZAPFEN OPENING CEREMONY
If you head along on Friday, October 6, you have to witness the tapping of the first keg and the whole Anzapfen Opening Ceremony. Steeped in tradition and a whole lot of fun it’s the perfect way to kick off your Oktoberfest experience.
2. GET KITTED OUT AND EXPECT A LOT OF (NOT SO) TRADITIONAL COSTUMES
Whilst not compulsory, what’s not to love about getting all dressed up in a traditional (or not so traditional) dirndl or lederhosen? Be prepared as some people will go all out and really get into the spirit of things, especially as the spirits start flowing. At least don a hat hey it’s all in the name of fun after all.
3. GET YOURSELF SOME BEER-PROOF SHOES
The geniuses at Adidas have crafted a beer proof shoe especially for Oktoberfest. The fancy footwear features a beer and vomit repellent coating over the leather, ensuring your kicks last through the festivities and well after the kick-ons have come to a close. With embroidery to match your lederhosen and the appropriate Prost (or Cheers in German) emblazoned on the side, it’d be rude not to give them a run at Oktoberfest.
4. EMBRACE YOUR INNER CHILD OR TAKE THE KIDS ON ALL THE CARNIVAL RIDES
Oktoberfest Brisbane is family friendly with a heap of rides to choose from, like dodgem cars, a giant slide and the 360 Dance party which swings 180 degrees before spinning around at a full 360 degrees, Oktoberfest Brisbane isn’t just about the beer. However it’s probably best to do the rides first thing before hitting the steins and wines, unless you want that vomit repelling coating on your new kicks to be put to the test.
5. FEAST ON AUTHENTIC GERMAN FARE
From pork knuckle to pretzels, you’ll be spoilt for choice in the food department. Bratwurst, sauerkraut, schnitzel and strudel, Black Forest cake, burgers, pork belly and Tyrolean Speckknödel – or speck dumpling with beer gravy are just some of the tasty treats on offer so you definitely won’t be going hungry, plus there’s plenty of carbs to soak up all the bier!
6. KEEP THE KIDS ENTERTAINED WITH PLENTY OF FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES
With face painting, a baby animal petting zoo, puppet theatre and so much more to keep the kiddies entertained for hours, Oktoberfest Brisbane is a great day out and a chance to soak up the best of authentic German traditions and culture with the whole family.
7. SHOP TIL YOU DROP
If you don’t own any traditional German dress, don’t fret, there’s plenty of opportunity to shop at Oktoberfest Brisbane. Schnucki Dirndl and Lederhosen has all your outfit needs whilst Fantastic Lights has an authentic style hat for everyone. Clock Shop Montville has your Cuckoo Clock and Bier Stein needs covered.
8. TAKE PART IN THE MANY COMPETITIONS
Think you have what it takes to be crowned Miss Oktoberfest Brisbane? Or maybe you’re more of a Bavarian Strongman? There are plenty of competitions to take part in to embrace your inner Germanic spirit. Try your hand at Bavarian Brewing, or take your tastebuds on a trip around Oktoberfest with OktoberFeast – where you’ll learn what it takes to pair the perfect beer to the perfect meal. Getting involved in the festival is half the fun and a little healthy competition never hurt anyone.
9. TAKE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT ON THE OKTOBERFEST BRISBANE MAIN STAGE
Everything from Oompah Bands to traditional dancers, Heidi the Yodeller and fashion parades will be taking place on the Oktoberfest main stage. With something for everyone, it’s the perfect place to take a break from the beers and engage with some top-notch authentic entertainment.
10. ENJOY AUTHENTICALLY BREWED GERMAN BEERS, SPIRITS AND WINES – IT IS OKTOBERFEST AFTER ALL!
Obviously you have to sample the delicious authentically brewed biers, wines and spirits, it’s what Oktoberfest is all about after all. So get your mates together, dress up and celebrate the best of German food, drink and culture with a stein or two. PROST!
