It’s all too easy to fall into the Boxing Day sales trap – you’re still trying to digest Christmas dinner, and have no idea what you want or where to start, so you follow the horde of shoppers and grab things at random only to get home and find that you’ve just spent money on something you don’t even like.

Fear not! We’ve got the top tips to survive the sales without the fashion FOMO.

1. Make a list of the things you actually need – and a few that you really want
Whether it’s underwear, gym gear to kick off your New Year’s resolutions, that amazing dress you’ve had your eye on forever, or new appliances for your place, make a list of the things you ACTUALLY need or want before you hit the sales. This way you won’t get distracted by all the shiny sale signage and end up with half the store.

2. Plan ahead
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. One of my high school teachers used this expression so much it’s been drummed into me and it’s so true when it comes to sale shopping. Knowing what you’re after is half the battle in negotiating the sales and scoring what you want at a bargain. Know where things are in the stores you want to visit so you don’t waste precious time trying to find the shoe department.

3. Know your sizes
If you have the chance, try on the items before they hit the sales rack. If you know what size you are in the particular item you’re hunting for, you can save yourself the agony of fighting your way to a fitting room.

4. Set a budget and stick to it!
I know it’s a buzzkill to have a set spending limit but you know what’s an even bigger buzzkill? Checking your bank account after the sales and wondering where all your money went.

5. Hit the sales solo
Or with only one of your closest friends. This is not the time for a large group catch-up and you WILL lose each other in the massive crowd. Shopping with just one friend is great as you can give each other brutally honest feedback and move on to the next item ASAP.

6. Wear comfortable shoes and easily-changeable clothes
You’re going to be running around all day so comfy shoes are a must! Shopping is a sport during the Boxing Day sales. If you have to try things on, simple clothes that are easy to take on and off will make all the difference.

7. Sign up for newsletters and check social media
Some retailers will go on sale early or will advertise that certain items will be included in the sales. If you’re after something specific, it pays to do some research so you don’t miss out!

8. Check the refund policy
We’ve all purchased something in haste or excitement only to realise it doesn’t go with anything else in our wardrobe. Check the refund policies and know what your options are so you don’t waste your hard-earned cash on something you’re unsure of.

9. SHOP ONLINE
What’s better than scoring the same sweet deals from the comfort of your couch? No fighting someone for the same dress or dealing with nightmare traffic – you don’t even have to put pants on. I won’t tell if you won’t.
