I sat down with Calexico Director Nicky Charman to chat about decorating inspiration, her babies, and the true meaning of home.
Is there an intentional theme to your home?
We did an extensive renovation on our home when we first bought it – over three years ago now. It was very dated, with brown and beige carpets. Now, with a lot of black and white, grey furnishings, concrete kitchen benchtops, and indoor plants, it almost feels like a retreat when coming home after a long day at work. We’ve created it to be timeless and functional, with a feel-good vibe.
What are some of your favourite pieces in your home?
My new Art Deco marble coffee table – a Christmas gift from my husband, Jamie.
Our home is over 100 years old. We kept an original, unique gold light fixture in the living room; I think it keeps an element of the home’s history and is a point of difference.
Can I say the shoe room?
There is a shelved room under the staircase – a perfect space for keeping all my beauties in order.
What inspires you when decorating?
I love open spaces that encourage comfortable areas to entertain family and friends. I think we have managed to capture a New York loft feel with a touch of Parisian influence. These are two places I frequent biannually when on buying trips for Calexico.
In what room do you spend most of your time?
Our kitchen, which leads out onto our deck. Most summer nights we can be found between the two – cooking BBQs and entertaining with our latest French rosé find. I love the open-plan aspect, as it allows our family to interact with one another.
Does your home reflect your personality?
For sure. It’s timeless, with an eclectic feel.
Do you have a favourite memory from your childhood home?
We grew up on a property near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. Sitting out in our garden until late at night, [stargazing] with my two sisters is a fond memory.
When you are not at home, where can we find you?
At Calexico – my other baby. My first is our 20-month-old daughter, Lenny. And we have another one on the way in four weeks!
What are your three favourite items in your wardrobe?
I’ve got four! My leather moto jacket, my strappy leopard stilettos, the belt I designed, and a vintage Lanvin scarf that I was gifted by a close girlfriend.
If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would that be?
San Francisco is a city that really appeals to me. I love the city’s mix of modern and Victorian architecture. The underground music scene, local foodie gems and its laidback, free-spirited lifestyle would be incredible to experience daily.
To me, home means…
Much more than four walls. Home is a feeling that welcomes you with open arms and a few jokes… and an uncorked bottle waiting for some fun and relaxation.
