Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about one of Brisbane’s best producers.
He’s the Brisbane producer who was first discovered on SoundCloud and went on to be named Triple J’s Listen Out winner in 2014. Since then, 20-year-old Emmanuel John, familiarly known as UV boi فوق بنفسجي , has earned himself a place as one of Australia’s most unique and impressive producers. We chat to UV boi فوق بنفسجي about his latest track, what it’s like to play at some of the country’s biggest festivals, and what fans can expect from him in the future.
How did you first get into music?
I found producing music kinda by accident haha. When I was younger I enjoyed making lil film clips of random things on Microsoft Movie Maker and in the audio section I began mashing songs together (hardstyle and techno music). Gradually I wanted to write my own songs. I tried, failed and gave up at first but I loved it and it was a way for me to express my lil dumb teenage emotions properly.
When did you begin to realise could pursue as a career out of your music?
When I was in Sydney for the second time ever I got off the train and someone recognised me immediately upon stepping off the train. It was such a strange feeling but it was in that moment that I could see music as a career.
In recent years you’ve played festivals and shows alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. What’s it like playing a show and seeing the crowd singing and vibing your tracks?
It feels like stepping into a new world where all that matters is just you and the people with you and the music is what keeps it spinning.
You’ve just dropped your latest single, All I Want Is You. What can fans expect from the new track?
A balance of energy and emotion. (Listen to the track here)
You’ll be playing as part of Brisbane Festival. What can the audiences expect at a live UV show?
Brisbane Festival is getting an extra special show with me introducing something that I’ve always wanted to create. UV & the Boi band, an all-new live show with a three-piece band.
Is there anything you’re looking forward to checking out at this year’s festival?
It’ll actually be my first time properly attending Brisbane Festival, so I will check out as many things as I can. Looking forward to seeing the Gothic, Giallo, Gore: Masters of Italian Horror film. The I Just Came To Say Goodbye theatre show and AJ Tracey.
What’s your fave Brissie spot to play?
The Triffid is a really cool spot.
What’s your fave Brissie spot to unwind?
What can’t you live without?
You mentioned on FB that you have a special announcement for Australia coming. What can fans expect to see from UV boi?
