Like marshmallows for your eyes
I’m about to let you in on the biggest interior trend for Autumn Winter 2017: arm-knitted blankets. And it’s going to change your life.
Brisbane, we love you. But these never-ending heatwaves are sending even the most hardened of Queenslanders into a tailspin. While we are buckling under the humidity (and eating our body weight in Zooper Doopers), our friends in New York have been buried under metres of snow.
Our Instagram feeds are crammed with glittery shots of the winter wonderland: making snow angels in Central Park, drinking red wine in front of the fireplace, Diptyque candles artfully arranged next to mugs of hot chocolate. But something stopped our head-addled brains mid scroll…
It was this blanket:
These arm-knitted blankets were originally developed by Etsy seller Ohhio. In a wonderful moment of serendipity, Ukraine knitter Anna Marinenko spied some extra-chunky merino wool, and decided to knit using her arms instead of traditional knitting needles. The result was impressive, and after encouragement from the online community (and a successful Kickstarter campaign), the signature Ohhio look was born.
From the original design, the range has expanded to include scarves, jumpers, beanies, and even pet beds.
Other companies have quickly embraced the arm-knitting trend – these days, a quick Etsy search now garners more than 3000 results.
Not one to be outdone, Kendall Jenner recently jumped on the woven trend, splashing some serious cash on this “nest” couch by Italian designers Edra.
If you are feeling particularly crafty, join celebrity knitters (such as Kate Moss, Winona Ryder and RYAN GOSLING) by purchasing some do-it-yourself supplies. There are heaps of video tutorials available on YouTube, and most of them promise that you’ll be finished with your project in less than an hour so you could soon be a master of arm-knitted blankets in your own right. Your Grandma will be thrilled, we promise.
