We’ve got two words for you: FREE. DOUGHNUTS.
Whether you spell it “doughnut” or “donut”, there’s no arguing that doughnuts are one of the greatest culinary creations. Doughy, soft, and coated in cinnamon, or with a rich Nutella filling and thick layer of sprinkles, there’s no wrong way to enjoy this delicious baked treat.
National Donut Day is traditionally an American holiday celebrating the volunteer women of the Salvation Army who distributed free doughnuts to American soldiers during World War I and the Great Depression (just a little history lesson for you). With love for the doughy treat crossing seas and spreading across the globe, many Australian bakeries have also got on the trend of celebrating Doughnut Day, most notably Krispy Kreme, who gives away 30,000 free doughnuts across the country!
Read on to find out where you can get the most delicious doughnuts to celebrate the special day, and where you can nab some free ones.
Kripsy Kreme | Multiple locations – Free doughnuts at Myer Centre
Krispy Kreme is kind of the reason we are even celebrating Doughnut Day in Australia at all, thanks to their yearly free-doughnut giveaway. This year they are doing their biggest giveaway ever, generously feeding Australia with 30,000 free Original Glazed doughnuts! Seriously. Just walk up to the counter and ask for a free doughnut and THEY WILL GIVE YOU ONE. Craziness. Run, don’t walk!

Doughnut Time are celebrating the big day with big treats – seriously. Introducing: D’oh! Nut, Pig Poppa, and Chris Hemsworthy. Big Poppa is a Nutella-filled, M&M delight, while Chris Hemsworthy is a red-velvet vegan masterpiece – just as delicious as its namesake.
Nodo Doughnuts | Newstead
Nodo, the purest of doughnuts, is the answer to the question you didn’t know you were asking (the question of course, is “will doughnuts ever be healthy?”). Nodo doughnuts are naturally gluten-free, full of natural ingredients, and tolerant of every type of dietary preference. Start off with their Breakfast Doughnut (banana, maple cream cheese, and caramelised pecans), follow it up with the Valrhona Beets (chocolate and beetroot) for lunch, and finish the day with Raspberry and Coconut. Starting to see why this is the best day of the year?
Donut King | Multiple locations
There’s no way this Australian doughnut institution wasn’t going to be included on the list. It’s generally accepted as fact that no one does a warm cinnamon doughnut as well as Donut King. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, warm, and cinnamon-y sweet, this really is the OG of doughnuts – bow down.
The Doughnut Bar | Wintergarden, CBD
The team behind these gourmet baked goods must have some sort of insight to my soul, because their doughnuts speak to me on another level. With creativity that knows no bounds, The Doughtnut Bar are a new breed of bakers. The iconic Nutella Injectable comes with an actual syringe of Nutella. Drooooool. Not to mention their unique take on the cronut (we swear it’s better than the original), “doughcones”, which are ice-cream sundaes served in a doughnut cone, and their heart-stoppingly decadent doughnut shakes. I might need a defibrillator.
Brewbakers | Albion
For artisanal baked treats and flaky, doughnut goodness, you can’t go past Brewbakers and their original sourdough doughnuts. With flavours such as butterscotch, chocolate and jam, these fluffy doughnuts are soooooo delicious dipped in a coffee or enjoyed on their own.
