From Tom Ford to Alexander Wang, we’ve got you covered!
Every September, almost every Aussie fashionista (yes, including me), stops for the event of the season. I’m talking about New York Fashion Week, of course!
While we absolutely adore this time of year, most of us are forced to spend it staring longingly at our computer screens. We scroll through celebrity snaps and live streams of our favourite designer’s shows sporadically throughout the workday, hoping to catch a glimpse of the trends set to hit our shores next season.
Without the luxury of our full attention – or a corresponding time zone, for that matter – it’s easy to miss important events. For those of you who aren’t blessed with the incredible opportunity to admire designer collections every day (best job ever, right?), here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about New York Fashion Week.
Wednesday, September 7: Tom Ford
Sequins, velvet and… chains? Tom Ford’s AW16 range is far from your average cold weather collection. Think jaw-dropping statement dresses, embellished metal accessories and velvet like you’ve never seen it before. Spotted: our girl Gigi, killing it as always.
Thursday, September 8: Michael Costello
Florals for spring – who knew they could still make a statement? Oversized flower-clad headpieces give a new lease of life to the concept and take the trend from done to daring. A bell-sleeved off-the-shoulder dress and mulberry lip added an element of edge no one saw coming.
Friday, September 9: Zimmermann
Our favourite homegrown brand brought its A-game, as per usual. Lavish lace and layering embody everything soft and feminine, while over-the-knee boots and boyfriend blazers take the look from safe to sexy.
Friday, September 9: Jason Wu
Jason Wu is all about bold patterns, full skirts and sleek hair for Spring ’17, placing a modern, sophisticated spin on traditional seasonal prints. Geometric blooms are separated by prominent black panels, creating the perfect combination of edge and elegance.
Saturday, September 10: Dion Lee
On the opposite end of the style spectrum, Dion Lee displays muted Autumn-esque tones, bridging the divide between seasons, climates and colour palettes. The flavour of the hour: leather-look trenches for spring. Undeniably unconventional but, as usual, we love it!
Saturday, September 10: Jonathan Simkhai
At the Jonathan Simkhai SS17 show, pale cream flapper-like detailing is dominant. Intricate embellishments and sheer panels are paired perfectly with effortless jackets and dusty blue denim hues sculpting a scheme evocative of ’90s days gone by.
Saturday, September 10: Alexander Wang
As one of the most anticipated shows of the season, the front row at Alexander Wang was as star-studded as could be expected. Kylie Jenner’s squad just can’t seem to get enough of the ever-chic, androgynous, sporty luxe look. Top it off with a new collaboration with Adidas Originals and you’ve got the collection of the week all wrapped up, just like that!
Sunday, September 11: Victoria Beckham
While orange certainly isn’t the new black, it sure goes with it! VBSS17 is bursting with fresh orange, intertwined into our favourite Spice Girl’s long-time love of the monochromatic palette. The highlight of the show? Her oh-so-supportive son and husband sitting front row – ridiculously cute.
Monday, September 12: Carolina Herrera
Carolina Herrera’s new collection is every bride’s dream. Floaty fabric and eloquent necklines are prevalent but don’t worry, tomboys! She can, of course, do both. Browse through her active and corporate ranges – there is surely something for everyone.
Monday, September 12: Proenza Schouler
Dust off your platform sandals and fringed skirts; your old favorites are finally back on-trend. Proenza Schouler plays with unusual skirt shapes and double-breasted blazers, bringing back the element of obscurity we’ve all been missing.
Monday, September 12: Oscar de la Renta
This show had me feeling like I need a tropical escape! Exquisite prints and exposed midriffs are juxtaposed with the quintessential Oscar-worthy Oscar de la Renta gowns.
Monday, September 12: Anniesa Hasibuan
This show made HISTORY for a couple of reasons. Anniesa Hasibuan is the first Indonesian person to have a show at an official New York Fashion Week venue – that in itself is exciting. But even more amazing is that EVERY SINGLE ONE of her looks included a hijab. With a mixture of ready-to-wear pieces and evening gowns, Anniesa took the world by storm.
Tuesday, September 13: Vera Wang
Step out of the September wedding haze and prepare yourself for a new era of Vera Wang. Spring ’17 is sexier than ever with sheer slip dresses and splashes of skin surpassing full skirts and trains. We all love a good gown, but it’s time for a revolution, and who better to lead than Vera?
Tuesday, September 13: Monique Lhuillier
Monique Lhuillier’s new line is, without a doubt, one of the most gorgeous collections of gowns the girls here at Style have ever seen. Somehow (maybe through sorcery) the soft silhouettes have found the perfect balance between princess and party girl. And let’s face it, what girl doesn’t want to be both?
Wednesday, September 14: Michael Kors
From our watches to our workwear, we’ve always had a little obsession with Michael Kors, and this year is no exception. The range of swim, evening and office-inspired outfits provides the perfect platform on which to build an entire new-season wardrobe. (A girl can dream, right?)
Wednesday, September 14: Ralph Lauren
A supermodel in the making, Kendall Jenner embodied everything that is style and grace at Ralph Lauren. Incorporating both bright and neutral tones for work and play, Ralph’s new line is one lust-worthy look after another. The jewel box is one place we wish we were this week!
Thursday, September 15: Marc Jacobs
Stella Maxwell, the Hadid sisters, Irina Shayk, Kendall Jenner – the gang’s all here! Head back to the future with Marc Jacobs’ SS17 campaign. Metallics, dreads and crazy high heels… if the future is set to be this stylish, we’re on board.
