Who stole all the attention on music’s night of nights?
Award season is always an exciting time for fashion-lovers. But while events such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars tend to produce elegant and timeless looks, the Grammy Awards is home to some truly bizarre and risky red carpet looks.
And this year is no different. The 59th Grammy Awards red carpet boasted a number of outlandish and downright weird runway looks that left us questioning whether mirrors still exist in Hollywood homes or whether everything was simply a publicity stunt.
Here are the looks we loved, the ones we could leave behind, and the ones that will probably go down in meme history.
Our Aussie golden boy and Hottest 100 winner may have won his first Grammy for best dance album, but he won our hearts in a simple black suit with swipes of white paint on the lapels!
This list wouldn’t be complete without a mention of Queen Bey, even if she didn’t make an appearance on the red carpet before the event. Pregnancy didn’t stop the singer from delivering one of the most iconic performances in Grammy history, or from taking out the awards for Best Music Video and Best Urban Contemporary Album. After slaying her performance in a gold embellished dress that made her look like an actual saint, Bey slipped into a long-sleeved red sequin gown and looked absolutely flawless.
This Tom Ford dress may divide many fashion-lovers. Half the internet has turned to social media to compare Perry’s dress to a feather duster, but I’m absolutely loving it. I think she is probably one of the only stars who could pull off this look, and even if you hate the dress you can’t deny she has nailed her makeup and hair with products from her collaboration with CoverGirl.
At 43, Heidi Klum still rules the red carpet in this silver micro mini Phillipp Plein dress paired with sky-high platinum heels.
The Grammy red carpet regular has wowed us yet again in a stunning Ralph & Russo gown that shows the perfect amount of skin with ruffles in all the right places. All hail JLo, always!
Her big sister Bey may have slayed in a gold jewel-encrusted gown, but Solange’s gold Gucci gown on the red carpet was a winner for me. The singer came home with a Grammy for the Best R&B Performance, and just when you thought she couldn’t get any more chic, she stepped onstage in a beautiful Iris van Herpen gown (her second look for the night).
Paris made her red carpet debut and wowed fashion-watchers for all the right reasons. Her figure-hugging Balmain jumpsuit was delicately beaded in contrasting earth-tone stripes. The 18-year-old nailed her look with natural and dewy hair and makeup.
There ain’t no other boss like Rick Ross. The rapper was looking extra dapper in his all-black knee-length suit with signature sunglasses, loafers and diamond chains.
In typical RiRi fashion, the diva showed up to the red carpet fashionably late. She made a dramatic entrance in a show-stopping two-piece Armani Privé outfit, pairing a tangerine jewel-encrusted bralette with a voluminous black ruffled silk organza skirt. She completed the look with oversized Chopard jewellery.
GARY CLARK JNR & NICOLE TRUNFIO
This pair can do no wrong. Ever! Gary rocked an all-black look with signature hat, while supermodel Nic looked absolutely stunning in a burgundy lace Zuhair Murad gown.
Adele is the ultimate Grammy girl in green! After taking out the coveted award for Album of the Year (and winning the four other categories she was nominated for), the songstress delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech and dedicated her award to fellow nominee Beyoncé. Everyone was crying. Adele even snapped her Grammy in half, Mean Girls-style, and gave Queen Bey the other half. Backstage after the show, Adele added, “My album of the year was Lemonade, so a piece of me did die inside, as a Beyoncé fan”.
To be completely honest, I’ve never taken much notice of Lea Michele (I’m not a Glee fan, sorry not sorry). But this two-piece Roberto Cavalli gown is one of my favourite looks from the 59th Grammy Awards. I love how she opted for a natural makeup look with a pop of blush eye colour to complement the coloured embellishments on her gown.
CHRISSY TEIGEN & JOHN LEGEND
Chrissy and John are the epitome of #couplegoals once again with their complementing red carpet looks. Chrissy ticks all of the boxes in a black sheer laced-up and macramé-style gown, while John looked suave as ever in Gucci.
All eyes may have been on Beyoncé during her performance, but we couldn’t take our eyes of Blue Ivy’s cute pink Gucci suit! Does it come in my size?
Lady Gaga is known to shock with her red carpet fashion choices (who can forget that meat dress?). And this year’s Grammy look was no different. I can’t say I’m surprised.
If you haven’t seen images of CeeLo Green’s golden Grammys look yet, you must’ve been hiding under a rock. It’s gone viral and has become the butt of every joke and meme in the internet. But maybe that was his plan all along?
For a start, who is Girl Crush and why didn’t someone tell her she is wearing a kiddies’ ball pit? This is a publicity stunt if I ever saw one but she gets an A for effort.
I’m all for expressing your opinion and beliefs, but there is no joy in subjecting the public to such a heinous dress. Joy looked stunning on the night but should’ve just kept her white cape on.
JACQUELINE VAN BIERK
I wouldn’t expect anything less from the Dark Electro Pop queen. Although this bizarre nod to the old days of CDs is completely wrong, at least she is rocking it with confidence!
