It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…
As we approach the Christmas break, the balmy days begin to blend together and it’s for this reason that we’ll start the official weekend celebrations on a Thursday again this week (no work ever gets done on Friday anyway!).
Waltzing into the weekend to the sound of Michael Bublé’s Christmas album, Brisbane’s event calendar is bursting. Think store openings, comedic performances, summer spritz events and twinkling Christmas displays. We’ve got the rundown on the best events happening across the city to help you wrap up 2017!
SUNSET SPRITZ AT CUSTOMS HOUSE | THURS, DEC 7
The week is on the downhill stretch and as you step out of the office and into the summer heat, the thought of an icy cocktail is a welcome refreshment to cool you down and get you excited for the rest of the weekend’s events. Sunset Spritz at the Customs House has you covered and with some of the best river views in Brisbane you’ll feel like Christmas has come early! Can’t make it this week? Never fear, this pop-up event is on every Thurs-Sun through summer.
HUMANS BY CIRCA | THURS, DEC 7
Defying the physical and mental limits of the human body, this awe-inspiring theatrical performance will not only bewilder your senses with the sheer strength of the performers but will also have you reflecting on your lives and how much man/womankind can withstand. The show runs from December 6-9 from 5.30pm-7pm and believe us when we say it’ll be a heart-stopping performance.
MATT OKINE | THURS, DEC 7
If the Human by Circa show is a bit too heavy on the menu for your taste, we have a lighter option in the form of Triple J breakfast host gone comedian Matt Okine. This multi-award-winning comedian is bringing his genius to Brisbane and is guaranteed to give you those knee-slapping giggles (especially after a few glasses of wine). Catch him at the Tivoli from 7pm-10.30pm.
THE ENCHANTED GARDEN | FRI, DEC 8
Cue the Christmas festivities! Let your inner child come alive during Brisbane City’s free Xmas events by beginning with a walk through The Enchanted Garden at Roma Street Parkland. Get lost in a maze of twinkling lights from December 8-17 starting at 6.30pm each night, this mesmerising and unique display is bound to put a smile on even the grumpiest of Grinches.
YIN & GIN FRIDAY WITH STRETCH YOGA | FRI, DEC 8
We’re all about balance here at Style and the combination of yoga and gin makes us kind of excited. Imagine the happiness a relaxing stretch followed by a refreshing drink could bring to the end of your week! The team at Stretch Yoga will help you to unwind during their Yin & Gin event held on December 8 from 5.30pm-7pm. Plus, the class is followed by cheese and nibbles (sold!). As if it couldn’t get any better the ticket proceeds will go towards supporting Women’s Legal Service, a Queensland organisation that supports women and children who have been the victims of domestic violence. Booking is essential.
THE GOLD LOTTO CITY HALL LIGHTS | FRI, DEC 8
Lighting up Brisbane with a kaleidoscope of colours once again is the spectacular Gold Lotto City Hall Lights. This enchanting piece of free entertainment is something you’re going to want to work into your weekend plans and can be described as the shining star on top of the list of Christmas events being held across the city. Kicking off at 7.30pm on December 8 and running right through to Christmas Eve you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience the magical light projection show.
QUEENSLAND BALLET’S THE NUTCRACKER | FRI, DEC 8
Attention Brisbanites, if you’ve never been to the ballet then what better time to start than with Queensland Ballet’s rendition of The Nutcracker! The whimsical performance follows a young girl who is wide awake on Christmas Eve when the clock chimes midnight and a handsome prince (obviously) comes to life and takes her on an enchanting journey. Running from December 8-16 at 7.30pm, this is an unmissable event on the festive calendar.
SABO SKIRT IS OPENING IN CHERMSIDE | SAT, DEC 9
It could be some of the most fabulous news to hit our inbox this December – Sabo Skirt is opening at Westfield Chermside (Level 2, Opposite Sephora & H&M) this weekend! A little birdy told us that the first 100 customers will receive an exclusive goodie bag including treats from Bali Body, Batiste, OGX HairCare, FrankBod, T2, Style Magazines and more. Plus, a chance to meet and greet Thessy and Yiota for that Instagram pic! Officially opening on Saturday, December 9, at 11am. Get in some retail therapy and pop along and say hi!
BUBBLES & BRIE IN BRISBANE | SAT, DEC 9
Need we say more? This event is a triple threat (wine, cheese and the city – it’s a match made in heaven) and is Baedeker’s last event of 2017 so you know it’s going to be a winner. Think three hours of the finest selection of international and local cheeses, followed by a few glasses of bubbly to help you wind down to the new year – is cheese therapy a thing? Bring your besties and celebrate great cheese and wine on Dec 9, from 6pm-9pm, it’s sure to get you feeling merry this weekend.
PAUL MCCARTNEY ONE ON ONE TOUR | SAT, DEC 9
His recent collaboration with Kanye and Rihanna leads us to believe that this global music sensation, and former Beatle Paul McCartney is showing no signs of slowing down. Blending the old and the new, McCartney is throwing it back to some of the classics while putting a modern twist on his performance and it is a celebration of his illustrious career that has spanned more than 50 years. It could also be a perfect early Christmas present for the parentals!
LORD MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS CAROLS | SAT, DEC 9
Oh what fun it is to celebrate Christmas in Brisbane! The city’s iconic Riverstage will come alive on Saturday, December 9, for the annual Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols in support of Mater Miracles. Gates open at 4pm and the caroling will run from 7pm-9.30pm. It’s free so come along and enjoy the Christmas cheer with your family and friends.
BRISBANE VEGAN CHRISTMAS MARKET | SUN, DEC 10
It’s their last market of 2017 and you can guarantee that you’ll find some gems to gift your vegan friend for Christmas on Sunday, December 10. Make sure to take a leisurely stroll through West End, even if you don’t like vegan food, because there will be puppies to pat everywhere (we’re convinced!).
