That’s right. It’s that time of year again. Time to get out that maroon jersey and get ready for the kick-off on Wednesday, May 31.
Are you ready to yell QUEENSLANDER louder than the person behind you, next to you and in front of you?
MAROON FESTIVAL | SOUTH BANK
Footy fans, rejoice! For the first time, the South Bank Cultural Forecourt will be transformed into the ultimate Queenslander fanzone, for the 2017 Maroon Festival. The final day of The Maroon Festival is on Wednesday, May 31, and coincides with Game 1 of the 2017 Holden State of Origin Series. Several footy-related events will take place throughout the day, starting at 10am with a Legends Walk that honours former Queensland Origin greats. From 4pm, footy fans can enjoy Queensland-themed pre-game entertainment. A pre-game panel from 6pm will take you right up to the main event which will be broadcast live at the Queenslander Stage and Forecourt. Entry to all events is totally free!
ALFRED & CONSTANCE | FoORTITUDE VALLEY
Notorious for throwing some of the best parties in Brisbane, A&C is serving red and blue daiquiris so footy fans can support their State of Origin team. The game will screen on a big telly and the menu is full of $9 share-plates for mates. Be sure to get down early to snag a prime position in front of the screen.
THE CAXTON | PETRIE TERRACE
The Caxton is game-ready with its function packages guaranteed to get you in the mood to support those Queenslanders. A pre-game VIP event in the Haunt Bar offers 2½ hours of nibbles and beverages for $79 or a two-course meal in the Char Grill restaurant will set you back $89.
THE STORY BRIDGE HOTEL | KANGAROO POINT
This venue is just a little keen on the State of Origin. I mean they’re only showing the game from every single bar and restaurant in the venue. Whether you are drinking or eating, you can shout or boo at the screen from the comfort of your chair. The Story Bridge Hotel is also running free buses to and from the game.
REGATTA HOTEL | TOOWONG
Grab your fave maroon scarf and join State of Origin supporters in the Regatta courtyard for an open-air cinema viewing of the game. We hope you like loud and proud because this venue will not disappoint. P.S. There will be loaded dogs and more than 30 beers on tap. What is a footy game without beer and hotdogs?
THE FOX HOTEL | SOUTH BRISBANE
Cheer on your favourite players in between bites of your $5 steak. Support Queensland? Try a prawn and pineapple topping on your steak. NSW supporters get oysters and greens on theirs. There will also be XXXX summer buckets available and prizes to be won.
BAVARIAN BIER CAFÉ | EAGLE ST PIER
Watch the kick-off to the State of Origin while trying the brand new menu at Bavarian Bier Café. Prepare to eat your way through a selection of mouth-watering meats. There will be plenty of beer (in steins!) and plenty of people to debate the refs’ decisions with.
THE STOCK EXCHANGE | BRISBANE CITY
Watch the first of three games on Brisbane’s biggest rooftop projector screen. It is the perfect event to rug up for and watch your team kick some serious ass. This function provides a free barbecue, but don’t forget to book.
DARLING AND CO. | PADDINGTON
As one of the closest venues to the actual game, Darling & Co. will be in the heart of the action on Wednesday night. Whether you’re looking for a pre-game cheering vibe, mid-game viewing or post-game celebration (predicting Maroons to win) bring your sporty crew to Darling & Co.’s Fan Fair.
FRITZENBERGER | PETRIE TERRACE
At Fritzenberger over on Petrie Terrace, you can grab a simple burger and a brew. You might need some fast food quickly in the middle of all those fans yelling “Go, Maroons, go!”.
SANTA MONICA | BRISBANE CITY
If you’re after the laid-back vibes of California, where the drinks flow and the menu screams pizza and burgers, then Santa Monica Pizza and Burger Bar is your State of Origin go-to. Shift your work mode up a gear into game spirit.
Whether you wear maroon or blue, these are the places to go for the kick-off that kicks off the season. NSW supporters better take some tissues.
